Open interest analysis in futures

In simple language, open interest analysis helps a trader to understand the market scenario by only showing a number of futures contracts that have been changed hand during the market hours. It is mostly used by the Future and options contract traders.

Open Interest and volume analysis can often be a leading indicator when it comes to identifying market turns and reversals. When, after during/after a strong trend phase, the price suddenly slows and volume and Open Interests starts to decline, it signals that trading activity dries up. So, OPEN INTEREST means POSITIONS of TRADERS which are OUTSTANDING and not yet squared off. There are only two type of positions that a trader can take in the market, LONG & SHORT. Now, since for every LONG there is a SHORT and for every SHORT there is a LONG, so we don’t count OI as LONG + SHORT but either TOTAL LONGS or TOTAL SHORTS. Open interest is the total number of open and not yet closed long and short positions in futures contracts for a particular commodity. While volume counts every contract that trades, open interest only counts those contracts that still have open market risk. Volume and open interest are integral measures to guide one's trading decision on the futures markets, but as always, these indicators should be considered in relation to extraneous market events.
